Belarus creates conditions for wider use of the Internet by older people

Modern technologies significantly increase the possibilities of socialization and solution of pressing issues of the older generation. According to statistics, about 40% of people aged 60 years and older use the Internet. In accordance with the National Strategy of the Republic of Belarus «Active Longevity – 2030», it is planned to increase this indicator to the level of 65% by 2030. To this end, a number of measures are being implemented in the country to improve the digital literacy of older people:

  • understandable methods of training trainers are being developed;
  • methodological materials for specialists of the social service system are published;
  • group work is carried out in the territorial centers of social services for the population;
  • booklets and guides for older people are published, etc.

Creating conditions for increasing the digital literacy of older people makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 4, 9, 10 and other SDGs.

The topic of ensuring energy security and increasing energy independence through the use of local fuels, including renewable energy sources, diversifying the fuel and energy balance and reducing the energy intensity of GDP is very relevant for Belarus,

In the structure of energy sources in the country, almost 97% is occupied by the use of biomass, mainly wood fuel, and a little more than 3% – the energy of water, wind and solar. The actual power generating capacity of renewable energy installations has increased 14 times over the past 13 years and amounted to 630 MW at the beginning of 2023. Every year, the country saves almost 1 million tons of standard fuel due to energy saving measures.

The development of renewable energy sources makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 7, 13 and other SDGs.

Since 2020, a digital volunteer movement #iamonline has been operating in Belarus to open the maximum of mobile Internet opportunities for older people and people with disabilities. Since 2021, a project has been implemented to improve the digital mobile literacy of older people and people with disabilities #iamonline.

Over the two years of the project, over 1,500 people have joined the #yaonline digital volunteer movement, more than 1,000 employees of the social protection system and volunteers have improved their competencies in the education of older people and people with disabilities, several hundred volunteers and their students from all regions of the country were trained and were able to improve their digital literacy with the help of #iamonline educational programs.

In addition, to help participants in the #iamonline movement, methodological recommendations have been developed for social workers that they can use in their work with older people and people with disabilities, a «#iamonline-guide» has been published for older people, a series of brochures has been prepared in «clear language» for people with disabilities, etc. About 180 thousand Internet users have already used their digital version on the project website.

Increasing the digital mobile literacy of older people and people with disabilities contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 4, 9, 10 and other SDGs.

In order to enhance the entrepreneurial initiative in Orsha, there is a business incubator «Law and Order». The business incubator consults future and existing representatives of small and medium-sized businesses, as well as provides support in the preparation of constituent and other documents, the development of business projects and feasibility studies.

In 2022, more than 100 people applied to the advisory office. Today, the Orsha business incubator has at its disposal about 900 square meters of space, where 23 start-ups are already being implemented in various fields: they are mastering mechanical engineering and construction, creating an agricultural cluster, developing IT technologies, developing clothing collections for kids with special needs, etc.

Support for entrepreneurial initiative makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 8, 10 and other SDGs.

In order to maximize the extraction of secondary raw materials, as well as the efficient use of municipal waste, a waste sorting complex will be built in the Gomel region. The capacity of the complex will be about 200 thousand tons per year and will allow sorting up to 70 percent of all municipal waste. Waste will be transported to the landfill from the regional center and six adjacent districts – Gomel, Chechersk, Vetka, Dobrush, Rechitsa and Loevsky. The complex will be located on an area of 38 hectares, of which 21 will be occupied by a landfill, 17 by a plant. 348 jobs will be created here. The normative period of all works will be no more than 45 months.

The construction of the waste sorting complex will contribute to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 12, 13 and other SDGs.

On January 9, 2023, the district competition of youth projects «Lida – 2023» started in the Lida district. The purpose of the competition is to support the scientific and innovative activities of young people, as well as their involvement in the socio-economic development of the region.

The competition is open to individuals who are 14 to 20 years old studying in institutions of vocational and secondary specialized education in the Lida region and working in organizations and institutions of the Lida region aged 18 to 30 years. To participate in the competition, participants submit one or more projects in the nominations: «My Lidchina is my history», «My family: continuity, values and meanings», «My Lidchina. My pride!», «My dear language», «Ecology of my region», «My health» and «My hospitable Lidchina».

MTS is recruiting a new group to the online digital literacy school #TeachYourFellow. In the lessons of the online school, teachers will help older people to master mobile gadgets. The course participants will receive practical advice on how to protect themselves from the actions of scammers on the Web, as well as learn how to download applications, create accounts on social networks and instant messengers, use modern technologies in everyday life: make purchases in online stores, subscribe to online newspapers and magazines, pay utilities without going to the post office or the bank, ordering electronic coupons for the doctor, and more. The course is designed for 10 lessons.

Every year, a number of social service facilities are opened in the country to improve the quality and accessibility of receiving social services. In 2022, 24 facilities opened their doors, and about 20 more are scheduled to open in 2023. These include: departments of social rehabilitation, habilitation and day care for people with disabilities, stationary social centers, boarding schools, assisted living departments for the elderly and people with disabilities, etc.

The increase in the number of social service facilities for citizens makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 3, 10 and other SDGs.

From January 20 to March 10, 2023, Belarus will host the ІІ Republican competition of creative works «Children about the SDGs», organized by the Coordinating Center «Education for Sustainable Development» of the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after Maxim Tank.

Representatives of institutions of preschool and general secondary education can take part in the competition. Applications for participation in the competition are accepted until January 20, 2023.
