Belarus hosts national consultations on the transformation of education

On August 3, 2022, public discussions were held on the issue of transforming education on the basis of the educational institution «National Center for Artistic Creativity of Children and Youth».

The event was attended by more than 100 people from all regions of the country – representatives of children’s and youth parliaments, student and student self-government bodies, Youth Ambassadors of the Sustainable Development Goals, adolescents and young people from vulnerable groups.

The participants considered topical issues in the development of education – digital learning, obtaining skills for life and work, inclusive and safe schools, innovative solutions and ways to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 «Quality Education».

The proposals of young people on the development of education will be analyzed and presented by them for consideration at the National Round Table on preparation for the Summit on Education Transformation, which will make an important contribution to the achievement of the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goal 4 and other SDGs.

Today, in the conditions of dynamic socio-economic development of cities, one of the priority areas for the development of transport systems is the optimization of the route network and the increase in the efficiency of transportation in the regions.

In total, about 430 public transport routes have already been optimized in Belarus in 2022. The volume of passenger traffic amounted to about 605 million people – 96% of the level of 2021.

Improving public transport routes and developing transport infrastructure contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goal 9 and other SDGs.

On August 4, 2022, the National Children’s Educational and Health Center «Zubrenok» hosted the Day of Ecology, organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.

The program of the event included holding a dialogue platform «Youth participation in solving environmental problems» to discuss the Sustainable Development Goals in the direction of ecology, green economy and youth volunteer movements that work on environmental problems. In addition, a demonstration of testing surface waters on the basis of a mobile environmental laboratory, as well as open environmental sites, quizzes and environmental activities were organized for the participants of the event.

The Day of Ecology contributes to environmental education and the formation of environmental education of children and youth and contributes to the promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals of an environmental orientation.

The Republic of Belarus acceded to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2004. To fulfill the obligations of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Belarus, an international technical assistance project «Sustainable Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Chemicals in the Republic of Belarus, GEF-6» is being implemented.

In the Republic of Belarus, there are many warehouses of obsolete pesticides belonging to agricultural enterprises, as well as 5 underground storage facilities. In August 2022, as part of the implementation of the international technical assistance project «Sustainable management of persistent organic pollutants and chemicals in the Republic of Belarus», the territory of the Grodno region was finally cleared of obsolete pesticides. The obsolete pesticides were repackaged and prepared for cross-border movement with the aim of subsequent destruction at specialized facilities in Germany. About 120 tons of obsolete pesticides, including those that are persistent organic pollutants, were stored in the warehouse hangars of JSC «Holding Management Company «GrodnoOblselkhoztekhnika».

The sustainable management of persistent organic pollutants makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 12, 13, 15 and other SDGs.

From August 1 to September 15, 2022, the Belarusian Red Cross Society is holding an annual charity campaign «Let’s Get the Children to School». The campaign is aimed at helping children with disabilities, as well as children from low-income families, refugee families and others in need.

The school bag includes writing materials, notebooks, albums, colored paper and cardboard, school and sports uniforms, shoes, a backpack and other school supplies.

You can take part in the action by making a donation or transfer pre-purchased school supplies through the volunteers of the Belarusian Red Cross Society.

Providing additional support to needy schoolchildren makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 1, 4, 10 and other SDGs.

On October 25-28, 2022, the Council of Young Scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will hold the XIX International Scientific Conference «Youth in Science – 2022». Young scientists, graduate students, applicants, undergraduates, students, students from different countries are invited to participate in the conference.

The application for participation in the conference of young scientists must be filled out before August 5, 2022, for the participation of students – before October 1, 2022.

The International Scientific Conference «Youth in Science – 2022» contributes to the development of the scientific, technical and innovative potential of young people, international exchange of experience and contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goal 9 and other SDGs.

Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus dated July 25, 2022 № 490 approved the National Action Plan to improve the situation of children and protect their rights for 2022–2026.

The National Plan is aimed at the implementation by the Republic of Belarus of the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the creation of conditions for the protection of the rights and legitimate interests of children, as well as the free and effective participation of children and youth in the political, social, economic and cultural development of the state and society.

The document plans to hold 134 events. Among them are the preparation and publication of a thematic collection of legal acts «Rights of the Child», the development of mediation services in educational institutions, the implementation of the republican project «School of the SDG Volunteer», the promotion of employment and temporary employment of minors in their free time, the implementation of financial literacy programs and a qualitatively new level of economic education for children and adolescents, etc.

The adoption of the National Action Plan for the Advancement of the Status of Children and the Protection of their Rights for 2022-2026 will contribute to the reduction of cases of child abuse, strengthening the role of family values, strengthening the institution of the family, as well as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the year.

Today there are more than 36 thousand children with disabilities in the Republic of Belarus. The country has built a system of social protection for families raising children with disabilities.

When a child is diagnosed with a disability, the family is provided with state support in the form of disability allowances and pensions, social services are provided, including babysitting services and social respite. Also, families with children with disabilities are provided with technical means of social rehabilitation. About 250 thousand citizens receive them in the amount of more than 50 million rubles annually. In addition, there are 146 territorial centers of social services for the population in the country, which are an important link in the successive social rehabilitation work with children with disabilities.

The built-in system of social guarantees and benefits contributes to the creation of conditions for raising children with disabilities in a family environment and contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 3, 10 and other SDGs.

In Belarus, a technical committee for standardization «Smart Industry» (TK BY 40) has been established, whose activities will focus on such areas as industrial automated systems, computer-aided design and the application of information technologies in industry.

Any organization can become a member of TC BY 40. TC BY 40 has already included 22 organizations. Among them are the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Belarus, the Ministry of Communications and Informatization of the Republic of Belarus, the concerns «Bellesbumprom», «Belneftekhim», «Belgospischeprom», OJSC «Giprosvyaz», the administration of the Chinese-Belarusian industrial park «Great Stone», etc.

On July 21, 2022, the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus organized a dialogue platform to create conditions for education, rehabilitation, social adaptation and physical development of children with autism spectrum disorders. The event was attended by representatives of ministries, public organizations, specialists in the field of autistic disorder, etc.

Currently, 2,770 children in the Republic of Belarus have an autistic spectrum disorder. More than half of the students receive special education in the conditions of integrated education and training, about 15 percent of them receive general secondary education in regular groups and classes, and 10 percent receive education at home. In order to create conditions for the individual development of each child, a special working group will be formed under the Council of the Republic, which will deal with the integration of children with disabilities.

The inclusion of children with disabilities contributes to the formation of an inclusive society and contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 4, 10 and other SDGs.
