Youth vision for promoting the Sustainable Development Goals

Minsk State Linguistic University hosted the global café “Youth Vision for Promoting the Sustainable Development Goals: 2021”. The event was organized on the initiative of the Youth Ambassadors of the SDGs, Minsk State Linguistic University and the Public Republican Student Council. The SDGs Youth Ambassadors are active students who are engaged in the promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Republic of Belarus. Each of the Ambassadors represents one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The World Café was hosted by Youth Ambassadors Nikita Rachilovsky (BSPU student, Goal #4 “Quality Education”) and Stefania-Vitalia Vinnichek (BSU student, Goal #16 “Peace, Justice, and Effective Institutions”). The aim of the event was to discuss current problems in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and to put forward new ideas for their solution from the perspective of today’s students and future educators.

In working groups, participants developed projects in the areas of “Education”, “Environment”, “Health” and “Gender Equality”. The teams successfully completed their tasks, and the participants voiced their ideas, views, initiatives that will help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The State program “Energy saving” for 2021-2025 was approved by the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus № 103 of February 24, 2021. The purpose of the State program is to increase the efficiency of the production sphere of the national economy and strengthen the energy security of the country.

The State program consists of two subprograms: “Improving Energy Efficiency” and “Developing the Use of Local Fuel and Energy Resources, including Renewable Energy Sources.” Among the planned activities are: introducing modern energy efficient technologies, energy saving equipment, devices and materials; increasing the energy facilities efficiency, construction, reconstruction and modernization of energy sources using technological equipment operating on renewable energy sources. It is also planned to reduce dependence on hydrocarbon raw materials and increase the use of local fuels.

The expansion of infrastructure and modernization of technologies for a modern and sustainable energy supply is an important contribution to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7, “Affordable and Clean Energy”.

The national youth project “Youth: Unity in Development” started on March 11, 2021. During the launch of the project, National Coordinator on the Sustainable Development Goals Anatoly Isachanka stressed that the involvement of young people in the SDGs promotion is important for the development of the sustainable development management architecture that was created in Belarus.
 
The youth project will include a series of lectures in all regions of the country on the principles of sustainable development and the achievements of Belarus in implementing the 2030 Agenda. The speakers of the project will be the Youth Ambassadors of the SDGs.

The city project “Green Classes in the Belarusian capital” is implemented by the Minsk City Committee of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection together with the institution “Center for Environmental Education and Development”. Its aim is to foster a caring attitude to natural diversity and to draw children’s attention to environmental problems.

Pupils of green classes were given field diaries with information about the biodiversity of the school’s natural surroundings and environmental trails. Additional environmental education activities will also be conducted in the classrooms, making an important contribution toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals 4 “Quality Education”, 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”, 13 “Combating Climate Change” and 15 “Preserving Terrestrial Ecosystems”.

Belarus is developing a national brand

The Republic of Belarus has begun work to create a national brand. The road map for developing and promoting the brand of Belarus is being prepared by an interdepartmental working group which includes representatives of the Presidential Affairs Department, ministries, concerns, local authorities, the National Agency for Investment and Privatization, the National Centre for Marketing and Price Study.

Creating a national brand will make a recognizable positive image of the country, which can be used to attract foreign investment, develop tourism and represent the national business in international projects more effectively. The national brand will help show the economic, socio-cultural and natural and recreational potential of Belarus.

Grodno has the status of the youth capital in 2021. Throughout the year the city will host sports and cultural events for youth. The program opened with the festival “Grodno is the Youth Capital” which was attended by students, young deputies and representatives of youth parliaments. Exhibition “Grodno is a City of Opportunities for Youth”, awarding the winners of the National Universiade 2020, sports tournaments, the national seminar “Topical aspects of educational and ideological work in the educational system of the Republic of Belarus and ways to improve it”, Kupala Dictation and other events will be held in the city during the year. The program “Youth Capital of Belarus” is an important contribution of the country to the Sustainable Development Goals accelerator “Focus on Future Generations”.

The project “Online distance camp for people with disabilities” was implemented by Territorial Centers for Social Services in Bobruisk and Lida. People from Klichev and Osipovichi also took part in it. In a special group, video messages of the department’s specialists, contests, sports workouts, dancing flash mobs, useful master classes, materials on life safety were posted. There was personal messaging with each of the participants. This helped people with disabilities to better tolerate the conditions of self-isolation. Other innovative methods of work are also used in the day care department of the center: the use of alternative communication and interactive communication boards. On March 3, 2021, Belarusian-Hungarian consultations on the SDGs were held. The consultations were attended by Anatoly Isachenko, National Coordinator on the SDGs of the Republic of Belarus, the management of the State Secretariat of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Hungary, and the Office of the Hungarian National Coordinator on the SDGs.

The Hungarian side outlined the positive experience of Belarus in achieving the SDGs at the regional level. It was noted that the sustainable development process management architecture was established and is being successfully operated in Belarus.

The BSU Startup Center welcomed its first residents. They were eight young business projects in the field of ecology, education, IT technology, engineering, and services.

The Startup center will offer legal, marketing and consulting services to young entrepreneurs and provide scientific laboratories for research.  The Startup center activity is aimed at cooperation between science and business, coordination of projects, attraction of partners and investors for their realization, holding startup contests, hackathons and forums and is an important contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 9 “Industrialization, Innovation and Infrastructure”. Sustainable regional development is one of the key objectives of the Program of socio-economic development for 2021-2025. The results and prospects for regional development of the Mogilev region were discussed at the meeting of the Mogilev regional executive committee.

The meeting presented the results of industry, agriculture, construction, housing and utilities and sectors of the social sphere for 2016-2020, as well as considered the key aspects for 2021. These are the financial condition of organizations, creating the starting conditions to enter the trajectory of accelerated development and the deployment of a new investment cycle in the coming five years. The indicator “Investments in fixed capital” is defined as a target one, so it will serve to evaluate the performance of each district of the Mogilev region.
 
The main goal of the new five-year plan is to ensure social stability in the society and growth in the well-being of citizens through qualitative economic growth, building social capital, and creating comfortable conditions for life, work and self-fulfillment. To develop the main goal, the priorities of the Mogilev region for 2021 are defined as the even development ofthe Mogilev region districts, the growth of investment flows and profitability of enterprises and exports.
