On September 22-23, 2024, the Summit of the Future was held in New York, where the Belarusian delegation presented Belarus’ achievements in the field of sustainable development and put forward proposals for improving this work on a global scale.
The event was attended by the National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, Deputy Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Khomenko and the Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on International Affairs and National Security Sergei Aleinik.
Speaking at the interactive dialogue “Enhancing multilateralism for international peace and security”, Sergei Khomenko stated that Belarus has no internal contradictions or claims against other states and adheres to the principles of peaceful settlement of any disputes, equality of states, and non-interference in internal affairs.
The National Coordinator quoted from the letter of the President of the Republic of Belarus to the UN Secretary-General: “It is never too late to do what is right and vital. Today, when humanity is truly at a dangerous point, such a dialogue is needed more than ever before“.
In his speech, he also emphasized: “Belarus has always been and remains a peace-loving state that values good-neighborly relations and friendship between peoples. Only by working together, implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, and respecting each other, we can ensure peace and security”.

In his speech at the Plenary Session, Sergei Khomenko said that the Summit of the Future is an opportunity to revive multilateral cooperation against the backdrop of growing contradictions in global politics.
“We are convinced that even in the current difficult situation, UN member states can and must effectively address common challenges and threats. We hope that the Summit of the Future will provide additional impetus in this direction, especially in those areas that it directly affects. In addition, such impetus is necessary against the backdrop of weak intermediate results in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals on a global scale”, — said Sergey Khomenko.
In his speech, he specifically focused on Belarus’ successes in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and emphasized that Belarus is sincerely committed to the topic of sustainable development and is carrying out targeted work to fulfill its international obligations.
“In general, Belarus achieved significant success. Our achievements are due to two factors. Firstly, Belarus is sincerely committed to the topic of sustainable development and, as a result, carries out targeted work to implement international obligations. Secondly, we have built a strong socially oriented state that implements an effective policy in the interests of the individual: a state for the individual, a state in the name of the individual” — reported the National Coordinator.
Sergei Khomenko also expressed confidence that one of the most important results of the Summit should be the conclusion that a civilized future is categorically incompatible with illegal sanctions:
“Individual states spend billions on purchasing and supplying weapons to fuel conflicts. Why not spend these funds on eradicating hunger, poverty, and achieving the other Sustainable Development Goals in those countries that are in particular need of assistance? Because, there can be no development without peace. We call on Western countries to abandon neocolonial policies. Otherwise, all responsibility for failures in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the results of the Summit of the Future will lie with you”.
