Two information portals have been created in Belarus to analyze the achievement of the SDGs in each region

Within the framework of the international technical assistance project «Strengthening the capacity of the national statistical system of Belarus in the field of collection, analysis and dissemination of demographic data for the purposes of sustainable development of the country», the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus, with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in Belarus developed two new information statistical portal for the provision and analysis of regional data in the field of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Information and analytical system «Geostatistics». The portal provides the opportunity to interactively generate graphical visualization of spatial data and related official statistical information, which will allow, taking into account the disaggregation of data, to carry out analysis, scientific research, make decisions, and determine directions for further activities.
  • Information and analytical system «Platform of regional data on sustainable development». The portal presents 139 indicators. 78 indicators coincide with the national list and the national platform for monitoring reporting on sustainable development goals. Another 61 indicators reflect the specifics of regional development. These indicators make it possible to compare regions with each other and make rating assessments, as well as see what indicators are typical for one or more regions.

The functioning of the information statistical portals «Geostatistics» and «Regional Data Platform for Sustainable Development» will contribute to the development of regions and districts of Belarus, improving the quality of life of people, which will contribute to the implementation of the Agenda for Sustainable Development for the period up to 2030.

On December 15, 2023, a working meeting was held between representatives of the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Taxes and Duties with experts from the Regional Office of the United Nations Development Program in Istanbul and the United Nations Development Program in the Republic of Belarus.

The meeting participants identified promising areas of cooperation in the field of sustainable development, and also got acquainted with the initiatives of the United Nations Development Program, such as public and private partnerships in financing sustainable development, Tax4SDGs, and integrated national financing mechanisms.

On December 20, 2023, a meeting of the Council for Sustainable Development was held in Minsk.

During the meeting, participants discussed the results of the work of the Council for Sustainable Development in 2023 and the main directions of the CSD activities in 2024, the results of activities to implement the 2030 Agenda, improving approaches to monitoring and assessing progress in achieving the SDGs at the national and regional levels, development of the concept of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development for the period until 2040, implementation of the Strategy for the Development of the Circular Economy for the period until 2035, the contribution of business to achieving the SDGs.

On December 15 and 18, 2023, two 110 kV substations were opened:

  • «Cherkassy» in the Dzerzhinsky region will improve the reliability of power supply to large industrial consumers of the Dzerzhinsky region, will contribute to the development of the free economic zone «Minsk» and attract new investors.

  • «Aerodromnaya-2» in Minsk will provide reliable power supply to consumers of the residential complex «Minsk-Mir» and will become a worthy contribution to the development and improvement of the city. The substation has two power transformers with a total capacity of 80 MVA, a complete gas-insulated switchgear, and the latest relay protection, telemechanics and communications equipment.

In total, five 35-110 kV substations were built and reconstructed in the Minsk energy system in 2023, and another 6 are under construction. Work on modernizing power grids also continues: 640 km will be modernized in 2023. In total, more than 2.1 thousand km were built and modernized throughout the country in 11 months of 2023. It is planned that 3 thousand km will be modernized in 2024.

The creation and modernization of energy sources, increasing the country’s energy efficiency makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, 11 and other SDGs.

On December 14, 2023, as part of the implementation of the international technical assistance project «Sustainable management of persistent organic pollutants and chemicals in the Republic of Belarus, GEF-6», the removal of unusable pesticides from storages of agricultural organizations began in the Minsk region.

During the removal process, waste of hazard classes 1-2, located in storages, is repackaged, weighed and, in compliance with safe cross-border transportation, delivered to specialized enterprises, where they are environmentally safe to neutralize. The first 20 tons of toxic waste left the storage of OJSC «Slutsk Agroservice». By the end of April 2024, about 600 tons of unusable pesticides will be removed from the Minsk region.

To date, 21 storages in the Vitebsk and Grodno regions have been completely cleared of hazardous waste – this is about 920 tons.

The elimination of unusable pesticides from the territory of the country makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 13, 15 and other SDGs.

Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus dated December 12, 2023 № 882 approved the program for conducting statistical research for 2024.

The program was developed in order to generate and ensure the timely provision of official statistical information on the implementation of forecasts for the socio-economic development of the country to business entities, the media, scientific institutions, government bodies and other organizations.

The program is a list of state statistical observations and official statistical information generated by state statistical bodies and state organizations authorized to maintain state statistics, including in the form of express information, reports, statistical booklets, bulletins, collections, and reference books.

Providing reliable and timely statistical information makes an important contribution to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On December 14, 2023, a working meeting on the implementation of the Agreement on cooperation and interaction to stimulate women’s entrepreneurial initiative was held in Minsk.

The meeting participants summed up the implementation of the Action Plan for the implementation of the provisions of the Agreement for 2023, and also approved the Action Plan for the implementation of this Agreement for 2024. In total, 14 events were held in 2023, including a republican forum of women entrepreneurs, thematic round tables and seminars.

The development and stimulation of women’s business initiatives contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 5, 8, 10 and other SDGs.

At the office of the Soviet regional organization of the Belarusian Red Cross, the Volunteer Center of the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics launched the training project «Digital Literacy for the Elderly».

The thematic program was developed by volunteer children, students and the Volunteer Center of the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics and includes the basics of managing mobile instant messengers, social networks and basic knowledge of digital security. The training course consists of 10-12 lessons and will be conducted for a training group of 10-12 elderly people. The first lesson has already been successfully conducted on December 14, 2023.

On December 16, 2023, the «Innovation Storm» forum of science and business was held in Minsk, organized by the Minsk City Technopark with the support of the Minsk City Executive Committee.

The Forum provides an excellent opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and experience between scientists and business representatives. The main principle of the forum is « Complicated concepts in simple words».

As part of the forum program, participants discussed «artificial intelligence» and methods of its application, learned about the economy of impressions using the example of Belarusian and foreign cases, ways to «sell» their expertise, product, idea, and also studied a scheme for preparing a public speech.

The Science and Business Forum «Innovation Storm» promotes the interaction of scientific and technological progress with various areas of business and contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 8, 9 and other SDGs.

On December 12, 2023, a meeting of the intersectoral group on economics was held in Minsk within the framework of the Council for Sustainable Development.

Participants of the event got acquainted with an analytical report on the progress of the implementation of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development for the period until 2035, as well as the results of work on connecting government programs with the goals and objectives of sustainable development, and the comparability of national indicators with indicators for achieving the SDGs.

In Belarus, an assessment of the consolidated target and target indicators of existing 26 state programs was carried out, according to which the majority of state programs are fully or partially comparable with the national indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals. The degree of agreement is 60%. At the same time, the potential for further implementation of the SDGs was noted.

In addition, work on the development of the National Sustainable Development Strategy for the period until 2040 is underway in Belarus. Development priorities have already been identified and several foresight sessions have been held, as well as a conference, based on the results of which the first version of the concept has been developed, taking into account the analysis of global trends, risks and opportunities for Belarus.
