The Sustainable Development Goals are the benchmark for shaping policies on issues related to population aging, the implementation of which is impossible without making decisions in the interests of older citizens. Older persons make a broad contribution to economic and social development. Worldwide, October 1 is celebrated as International Day of Older Persons, the main task of which is to draw the world’s attention to the problems and needs of older people, as well as to raise public awareness of the problem of demographic aging of society.
The state policy of the Republic of Belarus is aimed at the full participation of older citizens in the life of society. The professionalism of the older generation is in demand in various spheres of the country’s economic activity. According to the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus, the number of people over the age of 65 has increased by 13.4% and is about 1.5 million, of which 1.7% are employed. To organize the participation of older people in solving issues affecting their interests, local authorities are working to create councils for older citizens. The purpose of the National Strategy is to create conditions for the most complete and effective realization of the potential of older citizens, sustainable improvement of their quality of life through the systematic adaptation of state and public institutions to the problem of population aging.
