23 June 2022
June 17 is annually celebrated as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. In 2022, this day is dedicated to the theme «Let’s overcome the drought together».
In the Republic of Belarus, the tasks of preventing degradation and restoring degraded lands are defined in national strategic documents. In 2021, the country approved the National Action Plan to Prevent Land (Soil) Degradation for 2021-2026, which provides for the restoration of degraded lands, as well as the use of soil-saving technologies in agriculture. Also, in 2021, a scale for grouping Belarusian soils according to the degree of resistance to droughts and drought events was developed. In addition, in 2022, it is planned to rehabilitate more than 20 thousand hectares of drained degraded peatlands.
Prevention of degradation and restoration of disturbed ecosystems make an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goal 15 and other SDGs.
