Belarus develops cartographic products for blind and visually impaired people

In 2021, 2,852 people with visual impairments were registered in general educational and preschool institutions of the Republic of Belarus, of which 569 people were in boarding schools.

For the education and social adaptation of blind and visually impaired people in Belarus, work is underway to develop and produce relief-graphic aids. Currently, RUE «Belkartography» has already developed experimental works: a tactile map «Republic of Belarus. Physical map» and the scheme «Planets of the solar system». These manuals have been adapted in the Minsk Special School №88 for visually impaired children. In 2022, it is planned to develop and adapt the atlas for the 4th grade «Chalavek and light. Maya Radzima – Belarus» for blind and visually impaired children. In addition, it is planned to include these positions in the thematic plan for the preparation and publication of educational cartographic manuals for institutions of general secondary, special and higher education.

The development of cartographic products for blind and visually impaired people contributes to the creation of a barrier-free environment, as well as to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 4, 10 and other SDGs.
