Belarus has introduced a state standard for the introduction of lean management

28 May 2025

Lean production is one of the most effective and structured methodologies for improving operational efficiency. This globally recognized approach offers a comprehensive system for optimizing production processes.

Analysis of the Belarusian practice shows that successful examples of lean management implementation in machine building, woodworking and light industry exist, but they are rather spotty in nature. In most cases, companies limit themselves to partial application of individual tools without realizing the full potential of the methodology.

To help enterprises to implement lean methodology on a systematic basis and constantly improve it, the Belarusian State Institute of Standardization and Certification has developed and introduced a new state standard “Quality Management. Lean management systems. Requirements and guidelines for application”.

The document combines all the best that has been accumulated in international and domestic practice and establishes requirements for the lean management system and guidelines for its application. In general, the standard offers organizations a set of requirements and recommendations, the application of which will contribute to improving the suitability and efficiency of activities by activating the creative forces and abilities of personnel.

In total, the standard contains 14 principles of lean management. There are four levels of requirements. Their implementation can be chosen by the organization based on its achievements, resources and development strategy. Such classification allows the enterprises to involve in this work, which are just beginning the development of lean management. This is important for the implementation of innovative regional projects and, accordingly, the formation of strong regions – one of the priorities of socio-economic development of the country until 2030.

The next steps in implementing the standard in the organizations of the country will be the formation of infrastructure for certification of lean management systems, training of expert auditors, implementation of educational programs for managers and specialists. A round table on the best lean practices and experience of their application for the enterprises of the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Belarus is also planned. A pilot list of organizations where these systems will be certified is being developed jointly with sectoral government bodies.

The introduction of lean production systems will help improve the quality of products and services, reduce production costs, improve working conditions and employee motivation, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 8, 12, 13 and the other SDGs by the Republic of Belarus.
