Belarus is increasing the use of municipal solid waste

21 October 2022

The main task in the field of municipal solid waste management is to increase the level of their processing with the involvement of secondary raw materials in the economic turnover. The level of use of municipal solid waste in 2021 in Belarus amounted to 31.1% and it is planned to ensure further growth of this indicator by 2022. To this end, the country:

  • work is underway to modernize and develop the infrastructure for the collection and processing of municipal solid waste;
  • measures are being taken to introduce new methods and technologies for the use of municipal solid waste;
  • a system of separate waste collection is being introduced in the sector of individual housing development, including in rural areas;
  • construction of three regional facilities for the sorting and use of municipal solid waste for the Baranovichi, Orsha and Bobruisk service areas is underway;
  • it is planned to build a complex for the processing of municipal waste with a capacity of about 600 thousand tons per year in Minsk by 2024.

In total, by the end of 2025, Belarus plans to build and put into operation 16 regional facilities for sorting and using municipal solid waste with a total capacity of about 1.2 million tons of municipal waste per year.

Efficient waste management makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 12, 13 and other SDGs.
