Belarus joined the Declaration on Forests and Land Use

17 November 2021

On November 10, 2021, during the Renewed high-level segment of the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), the Republic of Belarus joined the Declaration on Forests and Land Use, aimed at preventing forest loss.

The Republic of Belarus shares the principles aimed at preventing forest loss in the world and has a huge regional potential in the field of carbon dioxide absorption, because 40% of the territory of Belarus is covered with forests, which absorb a third of all CO2 emissions. Natural gas occupies the main share in the country’s energy balance. The share of renewable energy sources is over 9%. Work is underway to restore drained peatlands. It is also planned to implement projects for waterlogging another 1.5 million years. Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 8% with the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

The Declaration on Forests and Land Use contributes to the continuation of international cooperation on forest management, raising the priority of forest issues in the general UN agenda. Joining the Declaration contributes to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as well as the achievement of the Republic of Belarus 7,13,15,17 and other SDGs.
