On September 19-23 and 26, the United Nations General Assembly takes place in New York.

The Head of the Main Directorate of Multilateral Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, Irina Velichko, took part in the work of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly to discuss social and humanitarian issues, as well as human rights issues. During the general discussion, the situation of women in different countries was discussed.

In her speech, Irina Velichko noted that Belarus occupies a leading position in the gender equality ranking according to several criteria. Belarus is ranked 41st among 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2023. At the same time, according to the criterion of «economic participation and opportunity» the republic ranks seventh, and according to the criterion of «health and survival» it ranks first. Belarus ensures women’s participation in the decision-making process. The share of women in the Belarusian parliament is more than 35%, among civil servants and in the judiciary – more than 70% of women. For a number of years, the level of actual female unemployment in Belarus has been lower than that of men.

Also, the diplomat emphasized that Belarus will continue to maintain a high national standard in the field of gender equality and will comply with its international obligations.
