Belarus participated in the first SCO International Forum on Sustainable Development

On 16-17 April 2025, the I Shanghai Cooperation Organization International Forum on Sustainable Development was held in Omsk (Russian Federation).

The event was attended by representatives of government agencies, business, scientific community, diplomatic agencies, and expert community from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, India, China, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan.

The forum discussed mechanisms for accelerated achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, development of green economy, adaptation of regions to climate change, as well as integration of sustainable development into the implementation of national and international projects and other issues.

The Republic of Belarus was represented at the forum by Counselor of the Embassy of Belarus in the Russian Federation in Novosibirsk Sergei Telezhinsky. During his speech at the panel session “Sustainable Development in the SCO: from Local Initiatives to Global Results” he noted the active participation and high achievements of Belarus in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda: Belarus ranks 30th out of 167 countries in the international SDG ranking, with a progress rate of over 80%, which is the best among the SCO member countries.

Sergei Telezhinsky emphasized that the Republic of Belarus considers the initiative of the Russian Federation to establish the SCO Sustainable Development Council very timely, welcomes and supports it.

As a result of the SCO International Forum, a resolution was approved with a list of proposals that will form the basis for new international and national decisions in the field of sustainable development, the creation of a permanent international expert platform under the SCO Secretariat – the Council for Sustainable Development – was supported, and the holding of the SCO Youth Forum in 2025 in the Omsk region was approved.
