Biometric documents are introduced in Belarus

In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus dated March 16, 2021 № 107 « About biometric documents», biometric documents are introduced in the country from September 1, 2021. There will be 8 new types of documents containing biometric data, including a citizen identification card (ID-card) and a biometric passport. The new type of documents will have a built-in microcircuit containing a photographic image, fingerprints and other personal data of the owner, as well as a digital signature.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, as of September 1, 2021, 241 applications for issuing ID-cards and 141 applications for issuing biometric passports were accepted in the country.
Modern technology and digital methods of data processing are becoming increasingly important in the modern life of society and are an integral part of the country’s development and economic growth.
The contribution of the Republic of Belarus to digitalization contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 8, 9, 11 and other SDGs.
