National plan for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity approved in Belarus

By the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus dated December 21, 2021 №733, the National Action Plan for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity for 2021–2025 was approved.

The approved document takes into account modern approaches to the conservation of lands, forests and natural complexes, the rational and efficient use of mineral, water and biological resources, and also provides for measures aimed at preventing a reduction in the number of species of wild flora and fauna, the impact of negative factors of natural and anthropogenic origin.

The National Action Plan for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity for 2021–2025 includes activities for:

• improving legal regulation and methodological support in the field of biological diversity, public participation in making environmentally significant decisions;
• improving the accounting system in the field of biological diversity;
• development of a system of specially protected natural areas (PAs), conservation and sustainable use of natural ecological systems, development of ecological tourism in PAs, restoration of disturbed ecological systems;
• conservation and sustainable use of flora and fauna, creating conditions for preventing harmful effects on biological diversity as a result of economic and other activities;
• development of a system of information support for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, raising the level of education of the public, local residents, representatives of government bodies and other organizations on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.

The adoption of the National Plan for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity for 2021–2025 makes a significant contribution to the achievement of the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 13, 14, 15 and other SDGs.
