In 2020, about 1,000 hectares (ha) were re-wetted at the peatbog «Dokudovskoye» in the Lida region, most of which were re-wetted by the already proven and well-proven method of cascading drainage channels. In the same place, on an area of 70 hectares, a new method for the accelerated rehabilitation of lowland bogs was tested. The first results of the «revival» of the peat bog became visible a year later. It is expected that over the next few years, the peatland will be able to restore most of its important biospheric functions: the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere and its deposition in the form of peat, water filtration, biodiversity growth, and others.
The development and application of the new methodology was carried out within the framework of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) project «Wetlands» with the support of the Global Environment Facility, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The accelerated restoration of disturbed peatlands will contribute to a more successful achievement of priorities for the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, which will make an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 13, 15 and other SDGs.
