Special attention is paid to the restoration of wetlands in Belarus

February 2 is celebrated annually as World Wetland Day. In 2023, the topic of the day – «Restoration of swamps».
Belarus is actively working on the ecological rehabilitation of disturbed peatlands. At this moment:
- rewetting of the territories «Ostrovo» in the Smorgon district and «Dokudovsky» in the Lida district of the Grodno region, «Berezovik» in the Smorgon district of the Grodno region and the Vileika district of the Minsk region, «Verechskoye» in the Gorodok district, «Servech» in the Dokshitsky district, «Zhada» in the Miory and Sharkovshchina districts of the Vitebsk region on a total area of 13,519 hectares;
- a demonstration of approaches to the ecological rehabilitation of degrading transitional bogs in the swamp «Servech» on an area of about 70 hectares was carried out by removing trees and shrubs;
- a mini-project was implemented to restore the natural channel on the river «Servech». The optimal water level in the swamp was ensured in years with excessive rainfall;
- swamping of more than 4000 hectares of degraded drained peatlands in the Gomel region was carried out, etc.
The conservation and sustainable use of wetlands makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 13, 15 and other SDGs.
