The Development of renewable energy sources in the Republic of Belarus

9 August 2021

The topic of the development of renewable energy sources is relevant for the Republic of Belarus and is one of the tools for ensuring the country’s energy security.

In 2010, the Law of the Republic of Belarus «On Renewable Energy Sources» was adopted, conditions are being created for the development of wind energy, and there are also opportunities for the construction of solar power plants. It is planned to keep the share of renewable energy sources at the level of 8%, increase the capacity of installations of renewable energy sources by 26%, as well as reduce the consumption of traditional energy sources by 2025.

In 2021, the Ministry of Natural Resources, together with the United Nations Development Program and the Global Environment Facility, completed an international technical assistance project «Removing Barriers to Wind Energy Development in the Republic of Belarus».

In the Project for the period 2015-2021, the atlas of wind potential of Belarus was completely re-evaluated and updated, a map of insolation was prepared, and the qualifications of personnel working in the field of renewable energy were improved.

The implementation of the Project was aimed at reducing the harmful impact on the climate, reducing the level of greenhouse gases.

The development of renewable energy sources in the Republic of Belarus is an important contribution to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 7, 11 and 12 and other SDGs.
