The list of settlements in radioactive contamination zones will be updated in Belarus

13 June 2025

The Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor) is preparing an updated List of settlements located in radioactive contamination zones.

Work to clarify the radiation situation includes expeditionary visits to the territories of settlements with soil sampling and subsequent determination of the content of caesium-137, strontium-90 radionuclides and plutonium isotopes.

To date, a step-by-step program has already been developed to survey the levels of radioactive contamination of certain areas of Gomel, included in the city limits in 2000-2016. A working group was also formed and soil sampling was conducted at 14 locations in the city. Samples were taken in places of mass presence of people – in the immediate vicinity of kindergartens, schools, hospitals and other public places.

A substantiated decision on attributing the territory of Gomel to the zone of residence with periodic radiation control will be made taking into account the analysis of the data bank of the National Meteorological Service of the Republic of Belarus, which contains information on more than 750 samples on all zoning radionuclides.

Monitoring and assessment of the dynamics of radioactive contamination facilitates timely measures to protect the population and makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of the Sustainable Development Goal 3 and the other SDGs.
