The Paris Agreement is a real chance to keep the planet from climate catastrophe

17 August 2021

According to the observations of experts from the World Meteorological Organization in 2021, an abnormal heat in the form of unusually high temperatures was established in almost all parts of the northern hemisphere. Belarus is no exception. As a result, the number of fires and accidents at road and energy infrastructure facilities has increased.

Global warming is already causing long-term changes in the climate system. According to UN estimates, humanity has lost 1.23 million lives during 7,348 major disasters recorded in the world over 20 years. These events affected 4.2 billion people, resulting in a global economic loss of US $ 2.97 trillion.

Can pessimistic climate scenarios be avoided? Experts estimate that the number of days per year with extreme weather events could be halved if the Paris Agreement is fully implemented. Scientists agree that we have very little time to take urgent action to keep the rise in global average temperature within 1.5 ° C.

Implementation of the Paris Agreement is also a critical contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Republic of Belarus pays close attention to combating climate change. Currently, Belarus with the support of the United Nations Development Program is implementing a number of initiatives aimed at achieving common goals in combating climate change and adapting to its consequences. Systematic work is being carried out in the framework of three development projects, one of which is the EU4Climate. Within the framework of this project, experts of the United Nations Development Program in the Republic of Belarus have developed the second Nationally Determined Contribution and scenarios for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in the waste management, energy and industry sectors.
