The system of collection and processing of secondary raw materials is being improved in Belarus

19 November 2020

Waste management system in the Republic of Belarus is now focused on the principle waste use priority (in relation to its disposal) and on its involvement into circulation: 7 waste processing plants and 80 sorting and pre-sorting lines are operating in the country. In 2019 the level of municipal solid waste utilization was 23% (2.5 times more than in 2010). By 2035, according to the National Strategy for Management of Solid Municipal Waste and Secondary Material Resources in the Republic of Belarus, the indicator should be at least 90%.

The following technological solutions are envisaged for this purpose:

  • improvement of the system of separate waste collection;
  • introduction of a deposit system for handling disposable packaging;
  • introduction of composting;
  • energy use of waste.

In accordance with the Concept of creation of facilities for sorting and use of solid municipal wastes and landfills for their burial, design and construction of complexes for treatment of industrial waste in different cities of Belarus are being carried out. The number of solid waste disposal facilities that do not meet legal requirements is reduced. A rational system of secondary raw materials collection and processing helps to meet the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”, 13 “Combating Climate Change”, 11 “Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements”, 15 “Conservation of Terrestrial Ecosystems”. In particular, one of the objectives of Goal 12 is to significantly reduce the volume of waste by 2030 by taking measures to prevent its formation, reduction, recycling and reuse.
