Works on re-waterlogging of drained areas have been carried out in Belarus

September 15, 2021 Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Belarus, Chairman of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee Gennady Solovey, as well as representatives of various specialized departments and organizations summed up the results of the large-scale rehabilitation of peatlands in the Gomel region.

Works on waterlogging of drained territories were carried out in the country within the framework of the international technical assistance project «Restoration of drained peatlands in Belarus – 2nd phase». The coordination and implementation of the project is carried out by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus in accordance with the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus №623 dated October 30, 2020, funded by the Korean Forest Service within the framework of the Drylands Greening Partnership initiative. In the course of the project, a dam was built on the previously drained areas, and 120 dams were built using a special technology to retain water. An innovative system of automatic monitoring and early detection of forest fires «Forest Guard» was installed within the framework of the project.

Ecological rehabilitation of wetlands makes an important contribution to solving many global problems, as well as contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 13, 15 and others.
