On-site workshop “Investment opportunities for the development of areas affected by radioactive contamination as a result of the Chernobyl disaster”

On March 26, 2021 Kostyukovichi hosted an on-site workshop “Investment opportunities for the development of areas affected by radioactive contamination as a result of the Chernobyl disasterr” under the auspices of the National Coordinator for the Sustainable Development Goals, A.M. Isachenko. During the workshop, the concept of the Chernobyl Investment Platform was presented. Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNDP, local authorities, private and scientific sector and public organizations took part in the event.
The participants of the workshop presented the main directions of development for the Mogilev region districts exposed to radioactive contamination as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, project ideas and financing opportunities. S.A. Smolikova, Deputy Chairperson of the Kostyukovichi District Executive Committee, spoke about the development of the Kostyukovichi district and the implementation of specific measures to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the social and economic development of the district. G.M. Emelianova, Deputy Chairperson of the Krasnopolsk District Executive Committee, focused on the implementation of the main directions of the State program to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster for 2016-2020 in Krasnopolsk district. R.M. Illarionov, Deputy Chairperson of the Slavgorod District Executive Committee, presented the district initiatives that were the key to sustainable development of rural areas. A.V. Kutsarskaya, local assistant of the Cherikov District Executive Committee, presented sustainable development projects in Cherikov district. R.V. Melnikov, director of the Fund for Sustainable Region, spoke in detail about the operation of the Chigirin cluster.
Besides concrete examples of district sustainable development in the Mogilev region, the workshop participants discussed general questions of project activity development approaches (S.V. Tarasyuk, Director of the International Fund for Rural Development), opportunities for financing and stimulating small and medium businesses and entrepreneurship (Y.A. Kavetskaya, Head of Department on organization of financing small and medium enterprises of the Development Bank), scientific approaches to developing Chernobyl investment platform (N. Batova, Head of the sector of environmental and economic problems of the Institute of Economics of NASB), principles of innovation and green economy as the basis for creation of Chernobyl investment platform (V. Kozyr, Director of Technopark “Polessye” Ltd).
А. L. Abramyuk, UNDP Programme and Project Coordinator in the Republic of Belarus, presented to the participants the concept of the Chernobyl investment platform. It will create conditions for generalization of existing and innovative solutions, technologies, management and financing methods for revival of the affected territories and leave no one out of development opportunities. Thus, the platform will make a significant contribution to the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals and will be aimed at reducing disparities in the development of the regions of Belarus.
