Grodno region is completely cleared of unsuitable pesticides

The Republic of Belarus acceded to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2004. To fulfill the obligations of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Belarus, an international technical assistance project «Sustainable Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Chemicals in the Republic of Belarus, GEF-6» is being implemented.
In the Republic of Belarus, there are many warehouses of obsolete pesticides belonging to agricultural enterprises, as well as 5 underground storage facilities. In August 2022, as part of the implementation of the international technical assistance project «Sustainable management of persistent organic pollutants and chemicals in the Republic of Belarus», the territory of the Grodno region was finally cleared of obsolete pesticides. The obsolete pesticides were repackaged and prepared for cross-border movement with the aim of subsequent destruction at specialized facilities in Germany. About 120 tons of obsolete pesticides, including those that are persistent organic pollutants, were stored in the warehouse hangars of JSC «Holding Management Company «GrodnoOblselkhoztekhnika».
The sustainable management of persistent organic pollutants makes an important contribution to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of Sustainable Development Goals 12, 13, 15 and other SDGs.
