In accordance with the Decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus of January 21, 2025 No. 31 “On the issues of municipal waste management”, expired medicines should be separately collected for further utilization in accordance with special rules.
For this purpose, the Grodno Waste Utilization and Mechanical Waste Sorting Plant and the Grodno City Executive Committee launched a pilot project on installation of special containers with appropriate markings in Grodno organizations providing medical services. Such containers may be used for tablets, pills, capsules, suppositories, ointments, creams, packaged powders and other waste medicines, except liquid dosage forms. Expired medications can be discarded along with the blister packs, and paper or cardboard packaging and medication liners should be disposed of in a paper recycling or mixed recycling container.
Containers for separate collection of expired medicines have already been installed in State Institution of Healthcare “Grodno Central City Polyclinic” and city polyclinics #1, #5, #6, #7 in Grodno. It is planned to install such containers not only in polyclinics, but also in pharmacies throughout Grodno region.
Proper collection and recycling of municipal waste, including expired medicines, contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 3, 12, 13 and the other SDGs by the Republic of Belarus.
