The priority of this SDG accelerator is to promote a green economy – an economy based on a responsible attitude of people towards the planet’s resources and a minimum amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. With this model, environmental protection instead of being a burden on the economy becomes a driver of its development. Thus, new green technologies make the economy modern and future-oriented, increase its competitiveness, provide access to new markets and create new jobs.
The transition to a green economic model is based on the development of sectors that consume little or no fossil fuels. Such sectors include information and communication technologies, education, healthcare, and tourism. Belarus has notable advantages in these areas due to its highly educated population, compact and advantageous geographical location, infrastructure, climate and recognized world heritage.
Within this SDG acceleration platform, the main task is to develop mechanisms and programs for creating a market of green goods and services. To achieve this, the following measures can be taken: investing in green research and development, reducing energy consumption and minimizing waste, protecting and restoring ecosystems, developing ecotourism, introducing national schemes for trading greenhouse gas emissions allowances or a carbon tax, promoting the use of renewable energy sources, increasing the efficiency of fuel consumption, including through the use of electric vehicles, improving agriculture and organic food production, and others.
