CONTENTS OF THE ACTIVITY
The mobile veterinary ambulance “ZOOshance” strives to improve the living conditions of homeless and domestic animals, especially in remote and low-income areas of Belarus.
The main tasks of the work include spaying and neutering for animal population control, disease prevention through vaccination, emergency veterinary care, and educational programs for the local population.
KEY STEPS OF IMPLEMENTATION:
Calling emergency veterinary care is carried out subject to several criteria being met: the presence of a minimum number of animals collected in one place and in a relatively healthy condition. The location of the call is determined based on an assessment of the current needs and available resources of the initiative, as well as in close cooperation with local communities and volunteers.
In its activities, the initiative faces a number of challenges: from logistical and financial (related to planning trips to remote areas and ensuring stable funding), to the need to adapt to limited resources and develop strategies for effective interaction with local communities.
One of the features of the mobile veterinary service is the involvement of volunteer surgeons who are ready to assist in the treatment of stray animals in their free time from their main work. The main difficulty in this case is coordinating the schedule and ensuring the availability of these specialists to participate in scheduled visits. An additional difficulty is the provision of necessary, but often expensive, medications and medical supplies required for operations and treatment of animals.
RESULTS AND IMPACT OF THE INITIATIVE
During the two years of operation of the service, 700 cats and 50 dogs were sterilized. Thanks to sterilization and castration, the number of homeless animals on the streets has significantly decreased, which has reduced the risk of the spread of infectious diseases.
Providing access to quality veterinary care in remote and underserved areas improves animal health and overall community well-being.
An important aspect is also the educational impact: information and educational campaigns carried out within the framework of the initiative contribute to increasing public awareness of the importance of responsible treatment of animals, vaccination and sterilization. This influences the formation of a more humane and caring society.
The activities of the volunteer ambulance for animals “ZOOshance” have a significant positive impact on improving the veterinary infrastructure, and also improve the quality of life and health of both animals and people in the region.
