Sustainable Development Goals
Short description

Slavgorod in the Mogilev region is actively expanding its residential areas and related infrastructure. However, green infrastructure in these areas is underdeveloped. Using the approach of Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, green areas can be quickly created to meet the needs of new neighborhoods and their residents.

The main goal of the initiative of the Slavgorod regional organization of the public association “Belarusian Women’s Union” is to create a pilot city park in the new microdistrict “Molodezhny” and popularize this approach as a successful practice of reforestation in urban settings. The initiative was supported by international organizations, public organizations, national and local governments, and educational institutions.

Detailed description

    CONTENTS OF THE ACTIVITY

The main tasks within the framework of the work were the development of the “Concept for the creation of Miyawaki Park”, conducting an information and educational campaign and organizing events to lay the foundation of the park.

    KEY STEPS OF IMPLEMENTATION:

    • Preparation and planning. Conduct an introductory workshop with 20 key stakeholders to form a partnership network and define roles in the initiative. Development of a landscaping project on the basis of the State Research and Production Association “Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Bioresources”. Conducting studies of soil, climatic conditions, selection of local plant species to create the most adapted and biodiverse green space.
    • Development and construction. Creation of Miyawaki City Park. Planting various types of trees and shrubs according to the landscaping plan, constructing paths and paths from environmentally friendly materials, as well as installing small architectural forms and bicycle parking for the convenience of visitors.
    • Educational and social activities. Organizing environmental activist days. Organizing events with the participation of schoolchildren to teach the basics of ecology and the importance of nature conservation, including workshops on planting trees and creating a cozy space for animals.

Active use of local media and social networks to highlight the progress and achievements of the project, as well as the organization of information stands inside the park for educational purposes. Discussion of results, possible improvements and planning for future similar initiatives in the future.

RESULTS AND IMPACT OF THE INITIATIVE

In Slavgorod, a landscaped urban green space with an area of 500 m² was created based on the principle of the Miyawaki mini-forest.

Expected, that the mini-forest will absorb approximately 14,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (730 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per hectare) over five years. This will significantly reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It is also projected to improve air quality, reduce noise pollution by 10 decibels, increase local biodiversity by 18-fold, and minimize the negative impacts of extreme climate events.

In the coming years, it is expected that over 4 thousand people, including residents of Slavgorod and visiting tourists, will deepen their knowledge in the field of ecology. They will become more aware of key issues such as climate change and the importance of conserving biodiversity. The Slavgorod mini-forest will promote the active involvement of citizens in environmental initiatives and help increase their environmental awareness.
