On October 5-9, 2026, the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is taking place in Arusha (Tanzania). The main topic of the general debate is “Improving effective governance and empowering societies through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.” One of the key elements of the program will be the election of the IPU Chairman for 2026-2029.
The Republic of Belarus is represented at the event by Sergey Aleynik, Chairperson of the Permanent Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the Republic of Belarus, Alla Smolyak, member of this commission, and Sergey Rachkov, Chairperson of the Permanent Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.
During his speech at the 153rd Assembly of the Interparliamentary Union, Sergey Aleynik drew attention to modern global challenges, including the weakening of the role of international law, armed conflicts, climate change, trade restrictions and sanctions pressure. He noted the negative impact of these factors on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, stressing that a significant part of the resources today are directed to military needs instead of solving the problems of combating poverty, hunger, the consequences of pandemics and environmental problems.
Sergey Aleynik paid special attention to the importance of developing interstate cooperation based on mutual respect and the principle of sovereign equality of states. He stressed the important role of parliamentarians in promoting the unifying agenda and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the national level through the improvement of the legislative framework.
It was also noted that the Inter-Parliamentary Union is an important international platform for developing common approaches, exchanging best legislative practices and strengthening effective public administration.
Sergei Aleynik stressed Belarus’ consistent commitment to promoting a peaceful, creative and unifying international agenda.
Within the framework of the forum, the Belarusian delegation participates in general political discussions and events organized by the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Eurasia geopolitical Group. A number of bilateral meetings are planned on the sidelines of the assembly.
