From September 10 to September 30, 2025, as part of the SDG pilot initiative “Regional Information Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities – Assistance in Exercising and Protecting Their Rights”, an Inclusive Week was held in the Gomel region — a set of events aimed at developing an accessible environment, raising public awareness and supporting people with disabilities.
During this period, sports, preventive, and educational initiatives were implemented to strengthen the principles of inclusion and foster respect for the rights of every citizen.
One of the key events was the city tournament among participants of various disability categories, dedicated to the memory of Gennady Grigoryevich Zolotarev. The competitions were held in five sports: swimming, darts, chess, checkers and archery. The tournament brought together participants of all ages and physical abilities, as well as demonstrated their desire to achieve athletic results and willingness to compete fairly. The event also helped to strengthen cooperation between sports organizations and public associations working in the field of support for people with disabilities.
An important part of the Inclusive Week the STOP PARKING! campaign was held with the support of the Traffic Police Department of Internal Affairs of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee and the Committee on Labor, Employment and Social Protection of the Population. The event was aimed at preventing violations that impede the free movement of citizens and restrict their legal rights, primarily for people with disabilities.
During the campaign, traffic police officers monitored parking regulations in the territories of shopping malls, medical and social institutions of the city. Special attention was paid to parking spaces specifically designed for citizens with disabilities, as their accessibility is an important element in creating a barrier-free environment. It is planned that such actions will be carried out on a systematic basis.
As part of the educational direction of the Inclusive Week, nine educational videos have been prepared for people who have become wheelchair users. The created materials contain practical recommendations aimed at adapting to new living conditions, increasing independence and awareness. The implementation of this project helps to expand the available forms of support and improve the quality of rehabilitation services.
The Inclusive Week has become a confirmation of the importance of interagency cooperation and an integrated approach to accessibility issues. The events have contributed to the formation of a culture of respect, equal opportunities and responsible attitude towards the needs of people with disabilities in society.
The Inclusive Week was organized as part of the SDG pilot initiative “Regional Information Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities – Assistance in Exercising and Protecting Their Rights” implemented by the Gomel Regional NGO for Disabled Persons with Impaired Musculoskeletal Function “Disabled Persons with Spinal Injurie” with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Republic of Belarus as part of the Joint Project “Support to the Efforts of the Republic of Belarus in Nationalization and Localization of SDGs” funded by the Government of the Russian Federation.
The implementation of the SDG pilot initiative contributes to the achievement by the Republic of Belarus of the Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8, 10, 11 and the other SDGs.
