6 February 2026
On February 6, 2026, an expanded meeting of the board of the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus (Belstat) was held in Minsk to summarize the work of state statistical bodies in 2025 and the main areas of activity for 2026. One of the central topics of the board was the work on monitoring the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Inna Medvedeva, Chairperson of the Belstat, noted in her speech that the past year had completed the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of State Statistics until 2025. Among the key results, the launch of a government data management system was highlighted, including the creation of a catalog of data and metadata, a unified classification system, and work on analyzing government information resources for duplication and completeness.
Significant progress has also been made in optimizing the SDG monitoring information system: the national list of indicators has been practically formed, the level of harmonization with the global one has exceeded 70%, and the availability of data through household surveys has reached 95% and has been highly appreciated internationally. In 2025, validated national data will be submitted to the UN Global Database for more than 20 indicators. For the first time, a comprehensive assessment of the progress of achieving the SDGs at the national and regional levels was conducted, confirming the fulfillment and advancement of a number of targets of the 2030 Agenda. To ensure annual monitoring, it is planned to review regional targets and set thresholds for 2030.
Work continues other key areas: preparations for the 2030 population census and the seventh round of the MICS survey, the introduction of a new version of the classifier of economic activities and the provisions of the 2025 SNA, as well as the development of indicators for the National Wellbeing Index. The international agenda includes a meeting of the Statistical Council of the Belstat and the Rosstat, as well as further cooperation with the CIS Statistical Committee, the Eurasian Economic Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The UNDP has been and remains a reliable partner of Belarus and the Belstat, providing support in innovation, digitalization and international cooperation.
Speaking at the meeting, Armen Martirosyan, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in the Republic of Belarus, noted that in the field of data and statistics, the UNDP globally focuses on three key areas: strengthening national data collection and use systems, introducing innovative solutions to improve their quality and accessibility, and supporting the monitoring of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
In 2025, with the assistance of the UNDP, within the framework of the Joint Project “Support to the Efforts of the Republic of Belarus in Nationalization and Localization of SDGs”, funded by the Government of the Russian Federation:
In 2026, the partnership between the UNDP and the Belstat will develop with a focus on innovation. The plans include the preparation of proposals for the introduction of artificial intelligence into the SDG reporting platform and the use of mobile positioning data in statistics, as well as the development of a methodology for calculating the unemployment rate using the small area assessment method, which will allow obtaining more detailed data at the district and city levels, and may make Belarus one of the first countries in the region to apply this is the approach in practice. The UNDP will continue to support innovation, digitalization and the promotion of the best Belarusian practices in the field of SDG statistics on international platforms.
Improving the quality of statistical information collection and interpretation makes an important contribution to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
