17 October 2025

October 17, 2025, the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus (Belstat) hosted the seminar “Digital Universe of State Statistics Data of the Republic of Belarus”, dedicated to the celebration of World Statistics Day, which is celebrated on October 20.

During the seminar, students of the Belarusian State University of Economics were introduced to the key information systems and digital platforms of Belstat, as well as demonstrated the possibilities of interactive databases and the introduction of new technologies. The event allowed those present to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of government statistics in the modern world.

The seminar was opened by the Chairperson of Belstat Inna Medvedeva. In her welcoming speech, she stressed that the key objectives of state statistics are to ensure high quality and reliability of statistical data, as well as meeting the needs of all categories of users. It is government statistics that play an important role in forming a reliable information base for managerial decision-making at all levels of government.

“The professionalism and achievements of Belarusian statisticians have long gone beyond the borders of the republic. Our data, methods, and practical developments are reviewed and analyzed not only by the national but also by the global expert community. Our experience is presented on international platforms as an example of best practice. The Belarusian statistical system receives the highest ratings on a global level,” Inna Medvedeva said.

During the seminar, it was noted that an important area of statistics is the assessment of progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In the Republic of Belarus, according to the national assessment conducted by Belstat, by the end of 2023, the country’s progress in achieving the SDGs exceeds 80%.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) makes a special contribution to supporting countries in monitoring the achievement of the SDGs, helping adapt global targets and indicators to the national context, providing technical assistance in data collection, creating digital platforms, and visualizing progress.

In Belarus, UNDP provides expert and technical support to Belstat in improving the quality, accessibility and disaggregation of data, improving the monitoring of the SDG achievement, adapting international methodologies and setting up international platforms for the exchange of successful experiences.

With the support of the UNDP in Belarus:

  • Geostatistics Information and Analysis System has been improved, and new computer equipment has been purchased for it
  • Modernization of national and regional SDG reporting platforms continues
  • National Multidimensional Poverty Index has been developed that takes into account not only people’s incomes, but also factors such as education, health, housing conditions, employment, etc.
